Alternative Press
Better known as AP, is an American music magazine founded in June 1985 by 19-year-old Mike Shea in Cleveland, Ohio, starting out as a photocopied punk fanzine handed out at concerts to cover underground music ignored by the local press. AP relaunched in spring 1988 and rode the early-'90s alternative-rock explosion to become a national monthly powerhouse.
Famous for its "New Music Now" ethos, AP built its reputation by championing future superstars long before the mainstream caught on from Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Soundgarden to later breakouts like My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy and Paramore.
This July 1998 Issue #120, the "Lucky 13th Anniversary Issue" with Tori Amos on the cover, captures AP at its late-'90s peak — mixing alt-icons like Bad Religion and Jesus & Mary Chain and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.
