The Santa Barbara Independent
is a free alternative weekly newspaper launched in Santa Barbara, California in 1986, published weekly, every Thursday and still running today.
Billed as "Your News and Entertainment Paper," it built its reputation on a mix of local investigative news, progressive commentary, and deep arts, music, film and dining coverage for the Central Coast.
Like many '90s alt-weeklies, it was free on newsstands, supported by local advertising, and became an essential guide to what's hot in town, including its popular annual "Best of Santa Barbara" readers' poll.
This April 11-18, 1996 Vol. 10, No. 490 issue is classic Independent — leading with "Big Bad Voodoo Daddy Is Swinging" just as the swing revival was breaking out of California clubs, alongside local labor, film and culture stories.
