Down Beat

Subtitled Jazz, Blues & Beyond is one of America's oldest and most respected music magazines, founded in Chicago in 1934 and published monthly ever since.

Long considered the bible of jazz, it is famous for its in-depth interviews, album reviews with its signature star-rating system, Blindfold Test, and its annual Critics Poll, Readers Poll, and Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame, established in 1952.

This April 1999 issue is a landmark centennial tribute "Happy Birthday, Duke!" honoring Duke Ellington, born April 29, 1899, with rare photos, classic articles and event previews, timed to the opening of Down Beat's Hall of Fame.

Even the back cover tells a '90s story: the Selmer Bach "Kings of Swing" ad for Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, which ran across several issues, captures how the late '90s swing revival brought big-band jazz back to pop culture.
