Originally Gentlemen's Quarterly is Condé Nast's flagship American men's magazine, first launched in 1931 as Apparel Arts for the clothing trade before becoming a consumer fashion and lifestyle monthly in 1957 and shortening its name to GQ in 1967.
Published monthly and still running today, it moved far beyond suits and grooming to define modern men's culture with a mix of fashion spreads, celebrity profiles, sports, politics, and long-form journalism.
By the 1990s it was at its peak influence, known for polished covers and heavyweight writers tackling Hollywood, Washington, and literature in the same issue.
This December 1996 issue, with a casual-chic Tom Cruise "Pinned Down" at the height of his Jerry Maguire superstardom, is classic '90s GQ holiday style, NBA future-stars Allen Iverson and Stephon Marbury, plus pieces by Nicholas Lemann, Frank Conroy, and Tom Junod.
This issue includes a segment called "Lounge Acts" that feature blues and swing bands, including Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. The photo shoot was very cool and fun. We had to get fitted the night before in Los Angeles. We got to keep the clothes we were wearing in the photo shoot which was awesome too!
The Great Joe Williams. I got to see him perform at Fresno State University in the 80's.
This was the last photo taken at the shoot. The photographers wanted us to do something silly, and this is what made it into GQ, too funny.
This is a copy of the actual photo from the shoot that I purchased from the photographer.
These next photos were a couple polaroids taken on the photo shoot as test pictures for lighting. I had asked the photographer what was going happen with the pictures. He said I could a a couple if I wanted, so I thought I would include them here.
