PULSE!

This was the in-house music magazine of famous Tower Records, launched in 1983 under VP of Publishing Mike Farrace and published monthly for 222 issues until December 2002.

Initially given away free in Tower stores as a tabloid to boost record sales, it went to national newsstand distribution in 1992 with a $2.95 cover price, offering interviews, reviews and ads with a true record store clerk style, especially championing indie labels.

It’s a time capsule of the CD-era golden age of music retail before Tower’s U.S. closure.

This September 1998 issue “rites of SWING!” is classic PULSE!, staging a swing-revival summit with Brian Setzer, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s Scotty Morris and Royal Crown Revue’s Eddie Nichols, plus Lucinda Williams and Rancid.
