Meeting Philip Ng: The Birth Of A Friendship

It was December while on tour. We were in Chicago for a couple days to play a few shows at the House of Blues and other venues. It was also a great time in the band’s career. Every venue we played was a sold out show. Even all of The House of Blues venues we played across the country were all sold out.

During this time in Chicago, I had the wonderful fortune to meet a great family, the Ng’s. Philip Ng and his father Sam Ng. Sam Ng is a world renowned martial arts instructor, Sifu Sam Ng. His son Philip Ng was a young and upcoming martial arts instructor, Sifu Philip Ng. His family had created their own martial arts combat Kung Fu school, The Ng Family Martial Arts Association.

Sifu Sam Ng A 5th generation practitioner of the Choy Lay Fut system created by Great Grandmaster Chan Heung, Sifu Sam Ng has been practicing Choy Lay Fut for over 30 years.  A student of the late Grandmaster To Hon Cheung, Sifu Sam Ng has been teaching Choy Lay Fut Gung Fu publicly for over ten years.  After founding the Ng Family Chinese Martial Arts Association with his son instructor Philip Ng in 1997, Sifu Sam Ng has been involved in both organizing and performing in numerous martial arts demonstrations in the Chicago-land area.

Sifu Philip Ng In addition to being a 6th generation practitioner and instructor of Choy lay Fut Gung Fu under the supervision of his father and teacher, Sifu Sam Ng, Sifu Philip Ng is also an avid practitioner and instructor of Ving Tsun (Wing Chun) Gung Fu.  A student of the late Sifu Wong Shun Leung, Sifu Philip Ng continues to spread Sifu Wong’s teaching through the Ng Family Chinese Martial Arts Association that he had founded with his father.  Aside from his studies of the Chinese martial arts, Sifu Philip Ng also partakes in the study of arts such as Western Boxing, Korean Tae Kwon Do, Japanese Jujitsu and Filipino Escrima.

Getting to Know The Ng Family I was able to spend time with the Ng family while I was in Chicago. They were very generous with their time. We had a few meals together and talked quite a bit about martial arts, life, family, and of course music.

While visiting with them at their home, they gave me a few Kung Fu lessons. They even brought me to their Kung Fu school! It was very exciting to see their school and get a glimpse into their martial arts style .

I saw how Philip and his father worked hard to create their great Kung Fu school that was very respected. What I did not know yet, was that Philip was to become a very famous martial arts action star in Hong Kong, and here in the United States.

After The House of Blues Show

I had a great time visiting with Sam and Philip after our House of Blues show. I could sense that Philip’s father, Sam, was a great father. He was very aware and supportive of his son. I also got to meet Philip’s friends who were at the show. We all hung out after and visited with his friends.

Reflecting on My Time With The Ng Family

Afterwards, I thought about my visit to their home and their Kung Fu school. How they took time to explain their style of martial arts and show me a few moves.

Although I had studied karate and judo under my Sensei, Kirk Ellis, I had never been exposed to Kung Fu or the Wing Chun wooden practice dummy system. It had a big influence on me and I had the best time visiting with them in Chicago.

Meeting Sam and Philip was much more than a casual visit. They had shared so much of their time and life with me. I felt so impressed with how respectful they were of everything they came in contact with.

A Very Special Gift

When it was time to leave Chicago, as a parting gift, they gave me an official Kung Fu Martial Arts Academy workout shirt. It was so awesome. I felt I had made two new wonder friends, and in such a short amount of time.

As time passed, I’ve chatted with Philip only rarely through social media. He has become very famous in Hong Kong as an actor, director and martial arts stunt coordinator. He is very busy.

Philip was also recently nominated for Hong King's highest film award. Still to this day Philip is still very kind and gracious to everyone he meets.

Here are some links about Philip and their Academy.

Now I can say that I have met Chuck Norris and Philip Ng (Bruce Lee).

His family’s impression has stayed with me over the years, and will always be a very happy memory.
